Wednesday’s class will be spent reading about and discussing Special Envoys.   We will resume US Diplomatic Presentations on Friday.

DUE 12/13

  1. Please have your evaluations of the four special envoys discussed in your reading.  You may use the chart I provided on handout 1-1 or you may recreate the chart either in your notebook or electronically.
  2. In addition to your chart, please make a list of qualities/characteristics you believe is important for special envoys to have in order to be successful in their position.

Current Events On-Going Assignment

While we are focusing on US Diplomacy Presentations, I would like you to keep up with current events on your own.  This will be an assignment that will substitute for participation points.  I would like you to summarize at least five current world events per week.

  • Round 1 due Tuesday 11/29 – include events from 11/22 – 11/29.
  • Round 2 due Monday 12/5 – include events from 11/29 – 12/4.
  • Round 3 due Tuesday 12/ 13 – include events from 12/4 – 12/12.
  • Round 4 due Thursday 1/12 - include events from 1/7 – 1/11

In addition to the summary, you need to cite your source (the entire URL) and document the date of the article.  Your articles should come from various sources and the dates should be spread out throughout the week and not all be from the day before the assignment is due!

US Diplomacy Presentations

Starting Tuesday November 15 IR students will be making presentations to the class regarding specific diplomatic situations faced by the US over the course of its existence. The presentations will go in chronological order. Students should research their topic and be ready to explain the following:

  1. What is the nature of your event? What led up to it? What was the motivation behind it?
  2. Who (people/countries) is involved?
  3. How is the US involved directly or indirectly?
  4. What are the short and long term consequences of this event?
This is a 10 point assignment.  Your grade will be based on accuracy, clarity, and conciseness of the content, as well as your delivery and preparation.  You may use a note card, but by no means should you have a power point full of text that you plan to read verbatim.  Images are fine to use if they reinforce the verbal content.  As a guideline presentations should be somewhere between 5-7 minutes; do not go over 10 minutes if you have two events.  Rehearse your material to make sure you are somewhere in this parameter.
You will also need to cite your sources – at least two per topic; you may only use Wikipedia as a jumping off point, not as a primary source.  With that said, you should have at least two other sources per topic if you use Wikipedia.
On the day of your presentation, be prepared to hand in your source page and a synopsis (answers to the four content questions) of your presentation to Mrs. Mess.
